Special Election Results

Four races were held on Tuesday to fill vacancies in the Oklahoma Legislature. There were two House seats and two Senate elections that were held.

Senate

In the Senate Rep. Al McAffrey easily won election to fill the vacancy by outgoing Democrat Minority Leader Andrew Rice who resigned his seat earlier this year. McAffrey held the House seat that comprised the majority of Senate District 46. Because there were no primary opponents this election served as the General election and McAffrey will be sworn in as soon as the results are certified by the Election Commission.

In another race in District 20 Republicans held a four person primary to fill the void left by the death of Senator David Myers. AJ Griffin won this winner take all primary and will move on to an April 3rd General Election against Democrat Magnus Scott.

After the victory by McAffrey the Democrats now hold 16 seats in the Senate. This is the same number of Democrats that were in the Senate last session. However, until April 3rd General election is decided there will be one vacancy. So the Senate currently stands at 31 Republicans to 16 Democrats.

House of Representatives

In the House Democrat Curtis McDaniel won election in a four-candidate race to replace the vacancy in District 1 after the death of Rep. Rusty Farley. Farley was the first Republican to hold the seat so this is a pick-up for the Democrats in a traditionally rich Democrat district.

In the Tulsa area in District 71 Republican Katie Henke won easily to secure the Republican nomination to fill the vacancy by the resignation of Rep. Dan Sullivan. Henke will face Democrat Dan Arthrell who was victorious in the Democrat primary. They will face off on April 3rd.

With the election of Rep. McAffrey to the Senate the House now has 2 vacancies. One vacancy will be decided on April 3rd in District 31. The Governor will now call a special election to fill the vacancy created by Rep. McAffrey moving to the Senate. After the Democrats pick-up in District 1 the Democrats have actually picked up a seat in the House. The House currently stands at 68 Republicans to 32 Democrats until the other two seats are filled.
